How Do Family Intensives Work?

Family Intensive Therapy (referred to as “Intensives”) involves extended sessions and can typically run 90 minutes to 3 hours, depending on what has been discussed and agreed upon with your therapist. Intensives are designed to help families work through specific relational challenges in a focused and time-efficient way.

These sessions may take place over one or more consecutive days and are structured to promote deeper understanding, communication, and emotional connection among family members.

Here’s what to expect:

Family Assessment & Goal Setting

The process begins with an initial consultation or assessment to understand the current challenges, individual perspectives, and goals of each family member.

This step ensures that everyone’s voice is heard and that we have a clear, shared understanding of what the family wants to work toward.

Guided Family Sessions for Connection & Repair

The family comes together for structured sessions that support open, respectful communication.

With guidance from the therapist, each person practices listening, expressing their needs, and understanding others—laying the groundwork for emotional repair and healthier connection.

    Individual Preparation Sessions (as needed)

Before coming together as a group, family members may meet individually with the therapist to explore personal concerns, emotional triggers, and communication patterns.

These sessions help prepare each person to participate more openly and productively in the family work.

      Emotion & Body Awareness Work

Throughout the Intensive, family members are guided to notice where emotions show up in their bodies, how past events are affecting present interactions, and how to regulate their nervous systems in the moment.

This helps reduce reactivity and increase the ability to listen and speak with clarity and care.

      Action Plan for Moving Forward

Together, the family creates a concrete plan for how to move forward: what to practice, what boundaries to honor, and how to stay accountable to the changes they’ve begun.

This may include follow-up sessions, resources, or additional support as needed.

How Much Does A Family Intensive Cost?

Family Intensives are a private pay service and are not reimbursable by insurance. A detailed fee schedule will be provided in advance. Full payment is required at the time of booking to secure your scheduled dates.

Military families may be eligible for special pricing options, which will be outlined during the consultation.

        Cancellations and Rescheduling

Due to the significant time and preparation involved:

        • Cancellations made 10 or more days in advance will receive a full refund.
        • Cancellations made 5 days in advance will receive a 50% refund.
        • Cancellations made less than 48 hours in advance are non-refundable.
        • Rescheduling is subject to clinician availability and cannot be guaranteed.
          Participation & Consent

All participating family members must agree to attend and engage in the intensive process. Written consent will be obtained prior to the start of services. A pre-screening or consultation session may be required to determine clinical appropriateness and to clarify goals for the intensive.

Please note: Family Intensives are not appropriate in cases involving active domestic violence, ongoing abuse, or untreated severe mental health crises.

            Emergency Services

Family Intensives are not a substitute for emergency or crisis intervention. If you are experiencing a mental health emergency or safety concern, please call 911, go to your nearest emergency room, or contact a 24-hour crisis hotline.

              Why Clients Choose Fearlessly Inspired

              We Provide Family Intensives For:

              Communication Breakdowns

When family members feel misunderstood, shut down, or unheard, Intensives can help restore healthy communication patterns, rebuild trust, and teach new ways of listening and speaking that reduce defensiveness and increase connection.

              Major Life Transitions

Events like divorce, remarriage, relocation, college transitions, or loss can impact the family system. Intensives create space to process these changes together and reestablish a sense of safety and stability.

              Parenting Differences & Co-Parenting Issues

Whether parenting in the same household or across households, Intensives help parents align on values, expectations, and strategies, especially when conflict is affecting the child.

              Blended Family Adjustment

Families navigating step-parenting or blending households can use Intensives to understand different roles, clarify expectations, and develop a shared vision for the family unit.

              Parent-Teen Conflict

Whether it’s increased arguing, emotional distance, or behavioral concerns, an Intensive can help clarify boundaries, improve mutual understanding, and repair the emotional connection between caregivers and teens.

              Unresolved Events or Trauma

When families are stuck in the aftermath of a painful or disruptive experience, such as betrayal, a past incident, or chronic tension—an Intensive can help them name what happened, how it affected each person, and what’s needed for healing.

              Emotional Disconnection or Estrangement

When a family member is emotionally distant or estranged, an Intensive can offer a supported space to explore what led to the distance and what healing or boundaries might look like moving forward.

              Family Intensives FAQ’s

What is a Family Therapy Intensive, and how is it different from regular therapy?

A Family Therapy Intensive is a longer, more focused session (usually 90 minutes to 3 hours) designed to help families work through a specific issue in a shorter amount of time.

Instead of meeting weekly over several months, you spend concentrated time together over one or more days to go deeper and make progress more quickly.

What kinds of issues can be addressed in a Family Intensive?

Family Intensives can help with communication breakdowns, parent-teen conflict, emotional distance, blended family struggles, unresolved events, co-parenting challenges, and more.

They are ideal when a family feels stuck and wants to move forward in a more intentional, supported way.

Who should attend the Family Intensive?

That depends on the goals. Sometimes the full family attends all sessions, and other times sessions are divided between individuals (e.g., teen alone, parents alone, and then all together).

We’ll discuss the structure during your consultation and tailor it to what your family needs most.

Are Family Intensives covered by insurance?

No. Family Therapy Intensives are considered a private pay service and are not reimbursable by insurance.

However, we’ll provide clear information about fees up front, including any available discounts for military families.

What if not everyone in the family wants to participate?

Willing participation is essential for an Intensive to be effective. If one or more family members are hesitant, we’ll explore that during the consultation and assess whether an Intensive is the right fit at this time.

How do we prepare for a Family Intensive?

Before the Intensive, we’ll hold an initial assessment to understand your family’s needs and ensure everyone is clear on what to expect.

You’ll also receive guidance on how to prepare emotionally and logistically so you can arrive ready to engage and get the most out of the experience.
