How Do EMDR Intensives Work?
EMDR Intensives involve extended therapy sessions that typically run 90 minutes to 4 hours, depending on what has been discussed and agreed upon with your therapist. These sessions are designed to help you move through unresolved emotional experiences in a focused and time-efficient way.
EMDR Intensives may take place over one or more consecutive days and are structured to promote deeper emotional processing, clarity, and healing without the interruption of weekly session pacing.
Here’s what to expect:
Personalized Assessment
We start with a thorough intake to understand your needs, history, and goals. This ensures your intensive is tailored specifically for you.
Targeted EMDR Reprocessing
Using structured EMDR protocols, we work through distressing memories and patterns, helping your brain reprocess and integrate experiences more effectively—in a fraction of the time of traditional therapy.
Developmental History & Resource Building
We explore your background and life experiences to understand patterns and strengths. During this phase, we also install resourcing techniques (such as grounding, visualization, or nervous system regulation) to support emotional stability throughout the process.
Integration & Support
After the intensive, we provide tools and follow-up recommendations to help you maintain progress and continue your healing journey.
What Does A Typical EMDR Session Look Like?
Each EMDR Intensive follows a structured process designed to maximize healing in a condensed timeframe. While tailored to your specific needs, a typical intensive includes the following phases:
Step 1: Pre-Intensive Preparation
Before your intensive begins, you’ll complete an in-depth assessment, identify your goals and concerns, and receive a workbook to help you clarify what you’d like to focus on. This ensures a personalized and effective experience.
Step 2: Developmental History & Resource Building
We explore your background and life experiences to understand patterns and strengths. During this phase, we also install resourcing techniques (such as grounding, visualization, or nervous system regulation) to support emotional stability throughout the process.
Step 3: Target Sequence Planning
Together, we map out the key memories, emotions, or beliefs that need reprocessing. This structured approach ensures we focus on the most relevant experiences that are impacting your present-day well-being.
Step 4: EMDR Processing
Using bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or auditory cues), we guide your brain through processing distressing memories, negative beliefs, and emotional blocks. This allows for resolution, integration, and transformation at a faster pace than weekly sessions.
Step 5: Integration & Reflection
Between sessions, you’ll be encouraged to notice shifts, journal reflections, and track emotions to bring back to the next meeting. This deepens self-awareness and enhances the effectiveness of the intensive.

EMDR Intensives FAQ’s
What type of results can I expect with an EMDR intensive?
EMDR intensives are designed to accelerate your healing process, offering deep relief in a shorter amount of time compared to traditional weekly therapy. While individual experiences vary, many clients report:
- Faster Symptom Relief – Reduced anxiety, stress, and emotional distress in just a few sessions, rather than months of therapy.
- Breakthroughs & Clarity – A greater understanding of past experiences, patterns, and emotional triggers.
- Emotional Regulation & Resilience – Increased ability to manage emotions and respond to stress with more ease.
- Lasting Transformation – Long-term shifts in how you think, feel, and react to past traumas or challenges.
- Improved Relationships – As you heal, you may notice stronger, healthier connections with yourself and others.
Because intensives allow for extended processing time, you’re less likely to experience the “start-and-stop” feeling of weekly therapy. Instead, you get the fast pass to healing, moving through challenges with momentum and support.
How many EMDR intensive sessions will I need before I see results?
One of the biggest benefits of EMDR intensives is their ability to create significant shifts in a shorter amount of time compared to traditional weekly therapy. While each person’s journey is unique, many clients begin experiencing relief after just one intensive session.
The number of sessions you may need depends on factors such as:
- The nature of your concerns – Some clients seek an intensive for a specific traumatic event, while others work through long-standing patterns.
- Your goals for therapy – If you’re looking for targeted relief from a single issue, two to three intensives may be enough. For more complex trauma or multiple concerns, additional sessions may be beneficial.
- How your brain processes information – EMDR works with your nervous system’s natural ability to heal, so progress varies from person to person. Some clients experience rapid breakthroughs, while others may need more time.
Because intensives allow for extended processing without the “stop and start” of weekly therapy, many people report feeling lighter, clearer, and more regulated even after their first session.
Who are EMDR Intensives for?
EMDR intensives are ideal for those who are seeking fast, focused healing in a condensed timeframe and are ready for a deeper, transformative experience. They are designed for individuals who:
- Are ready to make significant progress quickly – If you’re looking for rapid relief from trauma, anxiety, or emotional blocks, intensives offer a more immersive approach that can help you move through challenges efficiently.
- Have busy schedules – If fitting in weekly therapy sessions is difficult, intensives offer flexible formats, such as 2-3 hour sessions, half-day, full-day, or multi-day intensives, so you can fit healing into your schedule.
- Feel stuck in traditional therapy – If you’ve been in therapy for a while but aren’t experiencing the breakthroughs you desire, intensives can provide the focus and continuity necessary for deeper transformation.
- Need to process a specific event or trauma – If there’s a particular trauma or emotional wound that continues to impact your life, intensives allow you to address it head-on, with the structured focus needed for healing.
- Are open to the process and committed – While the journey can be challenging, those who are ready for significant change, open to the process, and committed to doing the deep work will find that the rewards are well worth it. The experience can be intense, but it is also incredibly healing and transformative.
If you’re ready to make a significant change and fast-track your emotional healing, an EMDR intensive could be exactly what you need.
When should I consider an EMDR Intensive?
An EMDR intensive is the perfect option if you’re looking for fast, focused healing and need to make significant progress in a short amount of time. Consider an intensive if:
- Your time is limited and you need relief quickly – If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your struggles and don’t have the luxury of waiting weeks or months for progress, an intensive can provide rapid relief in just a few focused sessions.
- You feel stuck in the talk therapy process – If traditional therapy hasn’t been moving the needle for you or you’ve reached a plateau, an intensive offers a more immersive approach that bypasses the limitations of talk therapy, helping you make breakthroughs faster.
- You need to target a specific trauma or challenge – If there’s a particular event or emotional block that’s been holding you back, an intensive allows you to address it head-on with focused, targeted healing.
- You’re ready for deeper, faster progress – If you’re looking for lasting transformation and want to break through emotional barriers in a more efficient, impactful way, intensives can help you achieve results much quicker than weekly sessions.
- You want a more immersive experience – If you’re committed to the process and open to doing the hard work of healing, an intensive provides a deep, concentrated experience that can yield lasting change.
If you’re ready for quicker results and are open to the hard but rewarding work of healing, an EMDR intensive may be the perfect solution for you.
